A Day in the Life: Veterinary Technician

What do veterinary technicians do?

We defend those who can't speak for themselves. Pets can be difficult to work with at times, but they deserve the same level of compassion and care that human patients receive. Communicating with the pet owner, relying on what I've learned and experienced, and being attentive to a pet's non-verbal cues are vital to my occupation. My name is Nia, and I'm proud to be a veterinary technician.

What's a typical day like for veterinary technicians?

With all the different animals and owners I meet each day, I'm not so sure that there is a “typical day.” I'm the equivalent of an animal “nurse,” doing everything except for performing surgery, diagnosing animals on my own, and prescribing medications. Instead, I assist the veterinarian by administering first aid, taking vital signs, performing x-rays, training other personnel, running laboratory samples, preparing equipment, and more. Whether I'm comforting the patient or relaying information to the owner, my assistance allows the veterinarian to complete the work.

Where do veterinary technicians usually work?

I work in a private animal clinic, but there are many career options for veterinary technicians. They are often employed by laboratories, animal hospitals, boarding kennels, animal shelters, rescue leagues, and zoos. The Bureau of Labor Statistics estimates that veterinary technicians will see a 19% increase in job opportunities between 2018 and 2028.¹ Pets have always needed our loving care, and they will continue to do so, no matter where they live.

How do I become a veterinary technician?

Stautzenberger College offers an associate degree program that could be completed in as little as 24 months. Graduates must pass the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE), but SC's instructors help prepare students for it. Stautzenberger College's program also includes an externship, so you could gain hands-on experience with a local employer before graduation. Who knows?
