What is a Paralegal?

Behind every success verdict and in every area of law, a paralegal more than likely played a significant role in the outcome. Paralegals are an indispensable member of the legal system and fulfill a number of essential roles in this fast-paced environment. These duties may include providing attorney support, researching legal precedent, preparing legal documents, organizing and coordinating law office activity. In some cases, it may even include investigative work. Paralegals are found in almost every area of law and they are relied upon to fulfill various roles in most cases.

What Career Options are Available as a Paralegal?

Paralegals are found in every area of the law such as defense law, corporate law, international law or educational law. Paralegals are also found in every area of the legal system, including private firms, corporate law departments, governmental agencies and banks and financial institutions. As a part of the Stautzenberger Paralegal Diploma Program, you will study computer software, office procedures, law office technology, legal terminology, legal research and writing, civil litigation, torts, probate, criminal and family law. Students also take classes in oral communication, written communication and social sciences to develop their interpersonal skills, customer focus and writing skills. Students participate in a mock deposition to utilize and sharpen their skills in a setting similar to what they might experience as legal professionals. After you complete the Paralegal Diploma Program, you could continue with our online, 7-month Paralegal Associate Degree completion program.  That's only 17 months total to get an associate degree.

Students participate in a mock deposition to utilize and sharpen their skills in a setting similar to what they might experience as legal professionals.

Also known as legal assistants, paralegals perform a variety of tasks to support lawyers, including maintaining and organizing files, conducting legal research and drafting documents. The largest employers of legal assistants are law firms, but paralegals also work for in-house legal departments in the finance, insurance, consulting and healthcare sectors.
