Career Opportunities in Animal Welfare Administration

When you think about working with animals, what's the first career that comes to mind? Veterinarian? Zookeeper? Although these are common responses, the truth is that animals need assistance in a wide variety of settings. My name is Isabella, and I'm proud to work in animal welfare administration.

I help out at the local animal shelter, but you could work at animal boarding facilities, veterinary offices, animal training centers, zoos, or animal sanctuaries. All of these places offer opportunities to use what you've learned about facility management, animal health and nutrition, client communication, animal ethics and law, and animal behavior. Additionally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics estimated that job opportunities for animal care and service workers would increase by 16% between 2018 and 2028.1

What's a Day Like for Animal Welfare Administration Professionals?

I spend most of my day grooming, feeding, and exercising the animals in the shelter's care. I love seeing the animals' health improve and forming bonds with the animals. This allows me to determine what kind of household would be a good fit for each animal.

However, communication with other staff members and the public is equally important. Other volunteers and shelter workers look to me for guidance in animal care. I also inform the visitors about each animal's personality and individual needs. My goal is to ensure animals are matched with the right families so they don't end up in the shelter system again. Cleaning and administrative duties are also my responsibility, but the hard work is worth it when I see one of my four-legged friends going home with a loving family.

Although you may not decide to work in a shelter, all animal welfare administration professionals should know the same basic skills. Your priorities are to care for the animals like family members, establish good public relations, and keep the facility safe and open.
