If you’re ready for a career in a growing industry, love technology and are detail-oriented, a career in medical billing and coding may offer you an opportunity to put your skills to use. Graduates of Stautzenberger College’s medical billing and coding program can be qualified for entry-level positions in physicians’ offices, managed health care organizations, laboratories, medical centers, medical billing offices, and hospitals.
Classes in the Medical Billing and Coding Program
The program is designed to help you learn necessary skills in computer billing applications, administrative procedures, and medical law, along with courses in CPT, ICD, and HCPS coding, and insurance claim processing. Upon completion of the program, you can sit for the national voluntary Certified Professional Coding exam, administered by the American Academy of Professional Coders.
What Medical Billing and Coders Do
Also known as medical records and health information technicians, medical billing and coding specialists organize and manage health information data. They ensure its quality, accuracy, accessibility, and security in both paper and electronic systems. They use various classification systems to code and categorize patient information for insurance reimbursement purposes, for databases and registries, and maintain patients’ medical and treatment histories.
Career Outlook for Medical Billing and Coding Specialists
Now is a great time to enter the health care field! According to the U.S. Department of Labor, Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2014-15 Edition, employment of medical records and health information technicians is expected to grow by 22%, much faster than the average for all occupations through 2022.
The Medical Billing and Coding diploma program provides students with a basic educational foundation for becoming a medical billing specialist, medical coder, health information technician, or medical records technician in today’s healthcare industry. The normal time to complete the program for a full-time student is less than a year. Upon successful completion of this program, the graduate will receive a diploma.
Take classes when it fits your schedule.
At Stautzenberger, we understand the “traditional” class schedule may not fit your schedule. You can choose to take day or evening classes at our Maumee campus, or online through our distance-learning program. You can complete online medical billing and coding courses when it fits your busy schedule, so you’ll be able to complete the program while still taking care of work, family and personal responsibilities. Students who opt to enroll in the online programs must meet specific system requirements for Distance Learning.
