Veterinary Technician Program Fast Facts:

• Stautzenberger College is the only American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) approved veterinary tech school in the Toledo, Ohio area.
• Our Toledo-area vet tech students can enroll in either day or evening classes.
• The normal time to complete this program for a full-time student is 27 months.
• Graduates of the Veterinary Technician program receive an associate of applied science degree.
• Graduates are eligible to take the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE). Those who successfully pass the VTNE are eligible for licensure in most states, including Ohio. In Ohio, licensure from the Ohio Veterinary Medical Licensing Board (OVMLB) is needed for employment as a Registered Veterinary Technician.
• Our pass rate for the VTNE for 2012 was 84%.
• Registered Veterinary Technicians usually work in veterinary offices, clinics, hospitals, or in private or government sponsored research facilities and food inspection.

Become a Veterinary Technician

Being a Veterinary Technician requires more than just a love for animals. The mission of the Veterinary Technician training program at Stautzenberger is to prepare students to work in a small animal clinic setting, but students are also exposed to large animal and research information. Veterinary medicine courses cover anatomy and physiology, laboratory and surgical techniques, anesthesiology, radiology and an extensive externship, which provides the graduate with an advanced technical background.

The Veterinary Technician graduate is prepared to perform a wide variety of medical procedures, to produce diagnostic radiographs and to become a vital member of the veterinary health care team.

Additional courses in communications and other business and general areas round out the associate of applied science degree. These courses furnish the graduate with additional skills to be successful in the veterinary business environment.

In addition to the required number of credit hours for completion of the Veterinary Technician Program, students are required to acquire Pre-occupational Development Skills (PODS). These volunteer hours are required as follows:

• First Year: Twenty hours spent assisting at various non-profit facilities approved by the program director. Forty hours of kennel duty at various facilities approved by the program director.
• Second Year: Forty hours of large animal experience at various facilities approved by the program director and may be started at any time after completion of first year required duties. Technical training with large animal species will be done during mandatory field trips and will account for at least 10 of the 40 hours required.

Stautzenberger College’s Summer Commencement Ceremony will be held on Friday, August 2, 2013 at 7:30pm at the Franciscan Center of Lourdes College. Commencement candidates must arrive by 6pm for check-in and photographs.

In order to be eligible to participate in the August Commencement, all coursework and externship hours must be completed by July 16, 2013. If there are any questions regarding eligibility to participate in the ceremony, contact your Program Director.

Each Commencement candidate will receive 4 tickets for this ceremony, which will be available for pickup at the bookstore beginning Monday, July 1st. Depending on the number of candidates who elect to participate, extra tickets may be available. Contact Carol Stacy at 419.866.0261 x134 for details. Seating is available on a first come, first serve basis and the auditorium will be opened to ticketed guests at 7:00 p.m.

Caps and gowns will be available for pickup at the bookstore from July 29thth to August 1st.
