Horse Lovers Careers in Veterinary Technology | Stautzenberger College Horse Lovers Can Find Rewarding Careers in Veterinary Technology

The field of animal care is as technologically advanced as the human healthcare setting.  Like the healthcare field, the field of modern veterinary medicine relies on qualified professionals and advances in equipment and technology. As part of this, there are many specialties dedicated to ensuring that a wide variety of animals receive the best in care. While some specialties ensure our pets are happy and healthy, others deal with larger animals and livestock.  The field of equine veterinary technology is an exciting field that offers those who love horses an opportunity to expand their desire for working with these animals beyond recreational riding.

The field of veterinary technology is a great career choice for those interested in working with horses.  Vet techs who work with horses can perform a variety of duties.  Many of the tasks performed are the same as those vet techs perform with smaller animals.  In an equine health or animal healthcare setting, vet techs collect preliminary health data on horses, including temperature, weight and heart rate.  Equine vet techs routinely collect biological samples for further testing. This may include collecting a blood, urine or tissue samples.  Working under the supervision of an equine veterinarian, vet techs also administer medication to horses and provide information and training to horse owners about how best to administer medication and awareness of any potential side effects. Like professionals who work with dogs and cats, equine vet techs assist the veterinarian before, during and after surgical procedures.  This may include preparing the surgical suite and surgical equipment, providing assistance to the veterinarian during the procedure and providing post-operative care to the patient.

There are many career options available for trained vet techs who want to work with horses.  While many equine veterinary technicians work in a private equine veterinary practice or private equine animal hospital, there are many employment opportunities in a variety of settings including:
• Animal shelters
• Breeding farms
• Research firms
• Educational institutions

A registered veterinary technician position requires an associate (2-year) degree from an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) accredited program.  After completion of an associate degree program and successful completion of the Veterinary Technician National Exam (VTNE), vet techs can continue their education by obtaining a particular specialty. Those with a love of horses often choose to specialize in equine care.  Equine vet techs can also find additional areas of specialty with careers in equine pharmaceuticals, equine equipment sales, or farm management roles.

As health care and technology in the field of animal health care continues to advance, the options in this field will only continue to grow. If you have an interest in horses that goes beyond recreation, working as a vet tech may be a great career choice for you.
Stautzenberger College’s Vet Tech program prepares graduates to perform a wide variety of medical procedures, produce diagnostic radiographs, anesthesia administration and surgical assisting. Potential career opportunities exist for licensed veterinary technicians in private practice, small and large animal hospitals, research, education, pharmaceuticals, zoos and the military.
